Samsung announced its second foldable smartphone at its Unpacked Event on February 11th and it packs massive improvements over the original Galaxy Fold.
It was no surprise that the Galaxy Z Flip was the showstopper of the event, launching alongside the much more mainstream Galaxy S20 series. The Z Flip comes with a clamshell-style folding mechanism which makes it much more compact and pocketable.
With a price tag of $1380, the new folding phone is much more affordable than its counterpart – Motorola Razr.
Samsung isn’t the first to introduce a clamshell-style folding smartphone, Motorola unveiled the Razr back in 2019 and is about to go on sale. The Motorola Razr brings back the retro design in a new avatar. The smartphone comes with a compact flexible plastic OLED display to give the smartphone a modern look. Though it costs $1500, slightly more than the Galaxy Z Flip, it has few tricks up its sleeve to impress you.
We put the Galaxy Z Flip against the Motorola Razr to give a clear idea about their specs.

Both the folding phone comes in a similar clamshell folding design and is quite sleek when compared to the Galaxy Fold. However, these phones take two separate paths to smartphone design. The Galaxy Z Flip is all about fresh modern design as per the smartphones of today. The Razr, on the other hand, is all about the nostalgia that reminds us of the popular Razr flip phone series from 2004.
The Samsung Galaxy Flip folds open to reveal a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED display that is finished with ultra-thin flexible glass. When unfolded, the Z Flip looks like any other Samsung’s Flagship phone with narrow bezels surrounding the display and a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. On the other hand, unfolding the Razr reveals a wide notch that holds the selfie camera.
The Razr has a chin on the bottom housing the fingerprint sensor, while the Z Flip has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Razr has a plastic screen and is a half-inch smaller on the diagonal. The Z Flip boasts a higher resolution main screen than the Razr.
The external display on the Z Flip is very small and just for interacting with notifications. The Quick View display on the Razr is bigger and shows notifications as well as control music playback along with serving as a viewfinder for taking selfies with the rear camera.
In terms of camera, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is way ahead of the Motorola Razr. The Z Flip features dual rear cameras pairing a 12 MP sensor with a secondary 12 MP ultrawide lens. When unfolded, it has a 10 MP front-facing camera at the top of the screen. Whereas, the Motorola Razr has a single 16 MP main camera with a TOF sensor and a 5 MP selfie camera. We would any day prefer Samsung’s image processing to Motorola’s.
In terms of performance, the Galaxy Z Flip has a considerable edge over the Motorola Razr as it comes with a more capable Snapdragon 855+ SoC, backed by 8GB of RAM. The Motorola Razr opts for a rather dated and midrange Snapdragon 710 SoC paired with 6GB RAM.
The processor on the Razr will likely become obsolete in the next few years. The Z Flip also has 256GB of storage, while the Razr comes with 128GB of storage. This configuration makes the Z Flip significantly faster than the Razr in terms of multitasking and raw performance.
The Z Flip has a much bigger 3,300mAh battery along with support for wireless charging. On the other hand, the Razr has a smaller 2510mAh battery which will hardly last a day.
